Review: Bissell Brothers Reciprocal IPA

Review of Bissell Brothers Reciprocal IPA from Bissell Brothers in Portland, ME.

Beer Type: India Pale Ale (IPA)  ABV: 7.3%  Tried on draught.

Their Description: “A showcase of Southern Hemisphere hops, and a giant thank-you to the true fans & supporters.

Bissell Brothers Reciprocal is an IPA, brewed with newly popular Vic Secret, Ella, and Summer hops, all hailing from Australia.”

The Reality: The only description of this beer I could find (there currently is not one on the Bissell Brothers website), doesn’t even come close to doing it justice, although it is nice that this beer was a thank you to their fans. The first thing you’re going to notice is the extremely cloudy, almost muddy appearance of this beer. It has a yellow-orange color and if you were swimming in a pool of it you wouldn’t be able to see your hand in front of your face (although you’d probably be quite happy). It has a bold tropical citrus hop scent that makes you want to get down to business. The flavor hits you with bright bitter hop notes up front followed by awesome layers of tropical mango flavor with hints of tangerine. This beer is nicely carbonated and has a mouth-watering tangy bitterness in the finish and aftertaste that keep you coming back for more.

Final Verdict: This beer is flat out juicy! I don’t mean that it tastes like juice, I mean that it makes all your tastebuds water and goes down so easy. Also, if you’re able to drink just one you’re a better person than me. This is a really innovative beer, extremely well-balanced, and to call it unfiltered would be an understatement. I think it could be enjoyed by IPA-lovers and hop-haters alike for different reasons, and at the end of the day shouldn’t beer bring us all together? If this brewery wasn’t 3 hours from my house it would be reciprocally stocked in my fridge. Speaking of my fridge, does anyone know if it’s still running? It made off with some of my best beer.
