In the competitive world of craft and microbrewing, breweries are always looking for new and creative ways to make their beer jump off the shelf and into your shopping cart. One of the ways they do that is with clever names/packaging, and occasionally they stumble upon something truly epic. When they do, we bring it to you here.
Today’s Epic Beer Name: The Empire Strikes Bock from Empire Brewing Co. in Syracuse, NY. In and of itself this isn’t the most clever beer name (the pun is pretty obvious), but what is clever is that fact that they get to use it at all. Many brewers have tried to use Star Wars themed beer names, and many brewers have had to change those names after they were threatened with legal action. However, I think Empire Brewing is allowed to continue making this beer because it is the name of their company and the beer is a bock, but what do I know about copyright infringement? I just feel like if Empire put out a “Return of the Jed-Rye” Saison, they would be ceasing and desisting pretty quickly.
Also, with all the hype surrounding Star Wars Episode VII what better time than now to release an expanded selection of Star Wars beers. If they’re willing to pay off the lawsuits, I’m willing to provide the ideas:
C-3POatmeal Stout: “It’s as dark and thick as the oil that lubricates him“.
Jabba the Nutt Brown: “Fans have always wondered where Jabba stores his nuts, and the answer is in this beer!“.
Admiral Ack-Barley Wine: “This beer is so good, you’ll think it’s a trap!“.
Luke’s Light Say-beer: “Who knew a plasma beam weapon could also cut calories?“.
Boba Oktoberfett: “Even in a galaxy far, far away, this German tradition is a bounty worth collecting“.
Since its debut in 1977, Star Wars has certainly inspired an entire generation of movie goers, and now maybe it will inspire an entire generation of brewers (that don’t mind wading into a legal quagmire). If not, at least will still have all the beer-inspired Star Wars memes.
