Their Description: “The best raw materials are used to make Birra Moretti, as well as a special blend of high quality hops that gives it a unique taste and fragrance, enhancing its perfectly balanced bitter taste. It is a bottom fermented beer with a golden color. This coloring is a result of the type of malt used in brewing. Its alcohol content is 4.6% alcohol by volume, a percentage that makes it ideal for any time of day. In fact, it is not a strong beer and is therefore perfect for drinking at lunch, at dinner or for evenings out with friends.”
The Reality: This beer has a very light golden color and fresh scent. A very weak-flavored beer, but smooth with no bad aftertaste. If I had to describe the barely-there flavor, I’d say it’s lightly hoppy. High carbonation level, drinks light and finishes clean. They say the “high quality hops” give it a “perfectly balanced bitter taste”, but I didn’t think it tasted bitter. In fact, I didn’t think it had much taste at all. It’s refreshing in the sense that cucumber water or unsweetened iced tea are refreshing. Their statement that it is “not a strong beer” couldn’t be more true.
Final Verdict: Birra Moretti is an interesting beer for a beer that’s not very interesting. It has similar qualities to some of the MacroBeer swill, like Coors Light or Heineken, but without the negatives. It doesn’t have that damp basement smell or dirty sock aftertaste, it’s just a really light clean crisp beer without a ton of discernible flavor. It’s definitely not my taste, but I wouldn’t say it’s “bad”, I’d say it’s got more quality than a typical MacroBeer. I’d being willing to chug one on a really hot day (assuming better options weren’t available), because it definitely has some thirst-quenching properties. Another interesting thing about Birra Moretti is that they’ve been in business so long that their old vintage advertising can feature pretty racist themes.
