Review: Founders All-Day IPA

Review of Founders All Day IPA from Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids, MI.

Beer Type: Session IPA  ABV: 4.7%  IBUs: 42  Tried from bottle.

Their Description: “The beer you’ve been waiting for. Keeps your taste satisfied while keeping your senses sharp. An all-day IPA naturally brewed with a complex array of malts, grains and hops. Balanced for optimal aromatics and a clean finish. The perfect reward for an honest day’s work and the ultimate companion to celebrate life’s simple pleasures.”

The Reality: This beer has a light hoppy and piney scent. The flavor is a perfect balance of hops, citrus and pine notes. It’s barely bitter at all, and as quickly as the flavor was there, it’s gone. It drinks a lot lighter than it looks, and it is quite smooth and refreshing. It has virtually no aftertaste, which is hard to do with any type of IPA, and it leaves your mouth clean in record time.

Final Verdict: When a beer company claims that they’ve made “the beer you’ve been waiting for”, they are usually just spewing a bunch of hyperbole, but in this case it’s actually true. As a rule, I love IPAs, but generally dislike session IPAs. I find that in order to weaken the ABV, they end up weakening the flavor as well. Founders has found a way to make a session IPA that makes sense, with a really well-balanced flavor that might not be as strong as some traditional IPAs, but is worthy in its own right, and you actually want to drink it. They came up with the perfect name because it is accurate, this is the IPA you drink if you want to drink IPA all day. They also say this beer is “The perfect reward for an honest day’s work and the ultimate companion to celebrate life’s simple pleasures”, but I think it would also be great after a dishonest day’s work, like robbing a bank, and would be a great way to celebrate life’s more complicated pleasures, like sitting on a tropical island (with no extradition laws) while enjoying the spoils of a bank heist.
