Review: Clown Shoes Space Cake Double IPA

Review of Clown Shoes Space Cake Double IPA from Clown Shoes Brewing in Ipswitch, MA

Beer Type: Double IPA  ABV: 9%  Tried on Draught.

Their Description: “Why are Miracle Mike and his dog, Bionic, being chased by many evil laser beam shooting cupcakes and two giant layer cake mother ships? Because we’re straight up lunatic fools? Well, maybe, but with a few brain cells remaining we managed to craft space cake double IPA, utilizing citrusy mosaic hops and an immaculate west coast style malt backbone. Dude… chill out. Enjoy some space cake.”

The Reality: The folks at clown shoes are known for favoring the obscure, so I cannot verify a lot of their claims. I can tell you that this beer has a citrusy hop scent, but not a heavy citrus flavor, just some background notes. This beer is pretty uniform from start to finish with a consistent balanced hoppiness throughout, never too bitter or too weak, which is a neat trick. The “malt backbone” is probably helping to create this effect, but you never taste the maltiness itself. The aftertaste is clean and doesn’t linger and you never notice the 9% ABV (unless you have several of them, of course), which is another neat trick for a double IPA. As for this beer being “immaculate”, it’s not Tom Brady or anything.

Final Verdict: I’ve never been attacked by cupcakes with laser beams or had a bionic astronaut dog, but I have had a lot of beer, and this is a really good one. Making a well-hopped, balanced, smooth Double IPA without a lingering bitter aftertaste is an accomplishment worth drinking. So are the brewers at Clown Shoes really lunatic fools?… Yeah, lunatic fools,… LIKE A FOX!!!
